La Asociación de Escritores de Ohio (AEO) extends a warm and enthusiastic invitation to you to join us for our next Reading Club session where we will delve into the masterful work of renowned author Mario Vargas Llosa. 

On this occasion, we will carefully explore his acclaimed novel “The City and the Dogs”, a work that has left an indelible mark on contemporary literature.

Get ready to enter the fascinating world of this masterpiece of Latin American literature, where the characters come to life and moral dilemmas are intertwined with the harsh reality of the Leoncio Prado Military School 

Join us on a literary journey that will take you through the intricate alleys of the city of Lima and the dark corridors of the military institution, as we explore the themes of loyalty, corruption, violence and destiny.

Who is Mario Vargas Llosa?
Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, born in Arequipa on March 28, 1936, better known as Mario Vargas Llosa, Marquis of Vargas Llosa, is a Peruvian writer who also has Spanish nationality since 1993 and Dominican nationality since June 2023.

Considered one of the most important contemporary novelists and essayists, his works have won numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, the Cervantes Prize in 1994, considered the most important in the Spanish language, the Prince of Asturias Prize for Literature in 1986, the Biblioteca Breve Prize in 1962, the Rómulo Gallegos Prize in 1967 and the Planeta Prize in 1993, among others.

Along with Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar and Carlos Fuentes, he is one of the central exponents of the Latin American boom.

Let us remember that this writer is also the creator of significant works such as:

  • “The Green House” (1966)
  • “Conversation in the Cathedral” (1969)
  • “Pantaleón and the Visitors” (1973)
  • “The Goat Festival” (2000)
  • “The War at the End of the World” (1981)
