The Pretentious Heron

La garza presumida / The Pretentious Heron
Book review
I want to share with you a very special journey that I have been lucky enough to undertake through the pages of my book “La garza presumida / The Pretentious Heron”.
This project, which is born from my love for children’s literature and my desire to connect with the little ones, is a bilingual story that seeks not only to entertain, but also to educate and reflect on fundamental values such as friendship and humility.
Joan's story
In this book, you will meet Juana, a heron who, as often happens in life, has a somewhat arrogant character.
From the first moment Juana arrives at the lagoon, she feels like the star of the place.
Its beautiful white feathers shine in the sun,
and she does not miss the opportunity to show them to all the inhabitants of the lagoon.
However, what seems to be a perfect life for Juana soon turns into a life lesson.
When Juana gets trapped in a fishing net, she faces a situation that will make her rethink her priorities.
In that moment of vulnerability, you begin to understand that external beauty is not everything, and that true wealth is found in the relationships we cultivate with others.
This transformation is the core of the story and is something I hope will resonate in the hearts of young readers.
A journey of self-discovery
Writing “The Presumptuous Heron” was a journey of self-discovery for me too.
While creating Juana, I reflected on my own experiences with vanity and humility. Often, we find ourselves caught up in seeking external approval, forgetting that what really matters are the genuine connections we form with others.
Through Juana, I want to convey that true beauty lies in being authentic and valuing those around us.
The bilingual format
One of the most exciting decisions I made in writing this book was to write it in a bilingual format.
As part of the Latino community in the United States, I feel that it is essential to offer children the opportunity to explore their cultural identity through literature.
“The Presumed Heron” is not only a story told in Spanish and English, but it also celebrates the diversity and richness of the language.
I hope that parents and educators find this book a valuable tool in fostering a love of reading in both languages.
Illustration and design
I can’t fail to mention the incredible work that has been done in illustrating this book.
The images perfectly complement the narrative, giving life to Juana and her surroundings.
Each illustration is a window to the lagoon, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the world of the story.
I think images are an essential part of the reading experience, especially for children, and I feel very lucky to have worked with a talented illustrator who understood my vision.
Final thoughts
As I conclude this review, I want to invite each of you to immerse yourself in Juana’s story.
I hope that by reading “The Presumptuous Heron”, you will not only enjoy a charming adventure, but also reflect on the value of friendship and the importance of being humble.
Life presents us with many lessons, and sometimes the most valuable ones come from the most difficult moments.
If you are a parent, an educator, or simply a lover of literature, I encourage you to share this story with the children around you.
I am convinced that “The Presumptuous Heron” will resonate in their hearts and teach them that, although beauty is fleeting, friendship and kindness are eternal.
Invitation to continue exploring
Thank you for joining me on this journey through my book.
I hope you find inspiration in the pages of “The Pretentious Heron” and continue to explore other stories from the Ohio Writers Association.
There is always something new to discover in the world of literature, and I am excited to share more stories with you in the future.
